The engine room crew of the carferry S.S. BADGER light the vessels steam boilers during spring fit-out at her home port of Ludington, Michigan, April 2018.

Built by the Christy Corp. of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., the BADGER was launched in 1952 with her sister ship the SPARTAN following her. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway decided to name their car ferries after the athletic teams of the Michigan State University, the Spartans, and the University of Wisconsin, the Badgers. Delegations from both colleges were on hand at the christening, roaring their traditional school cheers. The BADGER is still sailing today. Consider taking a trip on her. https://ssbadger.com/
