Hennepin steamer launch in 1885

The HENNEPIN steamer was launched in 1885 by Milwaukee’s Wolf and Davidson
shipyard. At 214 feet long and 1,372 gross tons, the vessel was equipped with an
engine salvaged from a shipwreck. The Michigan Shipwreck Research Association
described it as one of the most significant vessels ever to sail the Great Lakes. Its
conversion in 1902 “provided the model upon which virtually all future self-unloading
bulk vessels, on both fresh and salt water, would be based.” Here it is shown on
July 21, 1922. Photo Credit: Great Lakes Marine Collection — Milwaukee Public
